Volunteering
Find out how you can support our mission by lending us your time
Become a volunteer
We couldn’t do what we do without our team of dedicated, hard-working volunteers.
Our kitchen and class assistants are the core of our volunteer team, offering support to our teachers, washing up and helping to pack the ingredients for our weekly recipe kits.
We welcome all experiences and levels of skill in the kitchen! But if you'd like to donate other skills – from office administration and research to gardening, photography and beyond – we'd be very happy to hear from you!
What to expect
If you join as a kitchen and class assistant, shifts are up to 4 hours and held at the Square Food Foundation kitchen in Knowle West. Please note, all volunteers must complete a DBS check (this is something we'll pay for and help you with).
Every day is a little bit different, but typical tasks might include:
Class set up – Helping our teachers to set up cooking stations
Supporting our learners – Making everyone feel welcome and providing help as needed
Dishwashing support – Washing up, clearing and cleaning throughout the day
Packing recipe kits – Weighing and packing our fantastic recipe kits that reach 150 local households each week
Shifts are usually Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm, but occasionally we are able to offer weekend or evening opportunities, we also welcome regular volunteers but also those who can help out on an ad-hoc basis.
During your volunteer shift, you’ll also be invited to join us for lunch – a chance to connect with learners, other volunteers and the friendly Square Food Foundation team. And twice a year we throw a massive party to celebrate our amazing team of volunteers!

Other ways to volunteer
Have other skills to offer, or need more flexibility?
As a small team, there are lots of different ways you can support us – whether it’s gardening, marketing, admin or something else entirely! Please do get in touch and we’d be happy to learn more about you.
Our kitchen is wheelchair accessible and we are always working to become a more inclusive space. If you have accessibility needs as a volunteer, please let us know in your interest form so we are able to support you.
